Quick question, what side of your car is your gas tank? If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away. My solution is to uncofortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look. I you don't do this in your own car you definetly have done it in a borrowed or rental car. Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury. If you look at your gas guage, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo). It is that simple! I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated! Why don't the dealers share such importnant information with car buyers? I don't understand why this isn't in the drivers ed manual? I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been too or know has even thought of mentioning this to me? The only possible explantion can be that all these people probably don't even know!

Very interesting but always something that was going to provoke a reaction and tonnes of replies poured in. Here's a cross section...

i dont know where that guy was from, but he reckons that the little bowser on your fuel gauge determines which side of the car your fuel tank is on. well... i live in western australia, and my el falcon tells me otherwise. that dude is full of shit. no wonder no car manufacturer or mechanic ever told him that. fuckwit. sorry for gettin a bit testy, but false information is fucked up, especially on a site as honest as orsm. i have not yet offered anything to your site but i can assure you it will make piss all over that dudes effort.

for the fool who thought he could save the world by knowing what side his gas tank is on. You're Fucked. Just checked my 98 Chevy Silverado and pump gauge is on the right, gas fill up is on the left. Guess he'll have to have another stroke of genius to cover for being a loser.

either the dude got the sides mixed up or me and my friend have the only two cars in existance that are backwards... or the other option is that he's a dick and it's random on which side they decide to have the little gas pump on... love ya site, keep up the good work ;)

Dear Mr. Orsm, In response to Brad's email, it would probably help if he did a tiny bit more research outside of the 2 cars he photographed. Please see attached a picture of my fuel gague, indicating the filler cap is on the right. Then have a look at the next picture, and my filler cap is quite clearly there on the left hand side of my car. Not being pedantic or anything......... it just annoys me when people present false things as fact.Much respect to my Antipodean cousins!!

Hi Mr Orsm Legendary stuff you crank out each week...the website I mean... Ok so Brad claims to have found the secret to long life... ergo why you can never remember which side of the car you fuel cap is on. Bullllllsshiittt Brad.Bullshit! My four wheels of A to B-ness, a 98 Magna is on the other side. Now Im sure I just burst Brads bubble. But, surely I cant be the only carowner with a fucked up fuel gauge. Which then led me to think how you can tell where the fuel cap is, and it came to me so obviously. Here it is, are you ready?

If its not on the right of the car, its on the left. Simple hey! And some lucky fuckers dont even have to walk all the way around to find out. Some cars even have it in the boot section. I once saw a convertible that had the cap on top just behind the rear seat. Nonetheless I fixed it I dug out my largest router bit and drilled a fucking large hole into the fuel tank from the rear pillar. Cant miss that fuel cap now. Problem solved.

Thanks for the tip on where to find your gas tank. Seeing as I'm not a fucking moron, I already knew this, but dumbasses the world over will find the info usable. But I've got to point out a flaw in your revelation that comes courtesy of the geniuses at Ford. Rather than sticking to the simple universal scheme that you pointed out and that is adhered to by auto makers who don't allow their head to reside in their ass, they put the hose on the opposite side of the gas tank, and add an arrow pointing to the correct side.

Subject: Fuel Gauge Wrong
I'm sure you're inundated by now, and here's another comment: Pass on to Brad that his observation about fuel drawing gauges doesn't work here in Canada. We have 2 North American cars and a Japanese &  the fuel pump drawing by the gauge does not match the fuel gauge location on any of them. Coincidence I think.

long time reader, first time emailer............. sorry the fuel flap filler email is, unfortunally crap. the ford falcon ef-el has the filler on the left side, while the symbal shows the right side. oh well stiff shit. by the way VB is acceptable to drink, but fosters is a definate no no.

Giday... great site. That fuel tank thingy has got it wrong way round. The idea is that if the hose is displayed on the right side of the pump symbol then that is the view of the pump that you should have as you drive up. ie if the hose is on the right of the pump symbol then your tank is on the left. Keep up the great work and don't post my crummy details.

Sorry Brad but that’s just an Urban Legend…… the handle on the little petrol pump is sometimes on the same side as your filler cap and sometimes not!  You were just lucky picking two examples where it was true. In the last few years manufacturers have actually put a little arrow next to the petrol pump which points to the side of the car with the filler cap on. Obvious really..... what would you do without us pommies.

i have an update, my ford falcon has the hose pointing from the right side of the pump picture, but the petrol hole is on the left. that's when i noticed the arrow next to the pump picture, pointing left. I checked the instruments on a mate's car (newer model falcon than mine), and same thing. Hose is on the right side of the pump icon, but an arrow is present pointing left, hose might not point the way to the fuel hole, but the arrow sure does...nice info! Especially handy as i'm going on holiday in 4 weeks, and have no idea what my rental car will be yet. Enclosed is a pic of my instrument cluster featuring the pump icon

From an average Aussie: Douglas, the only thing wrong about "us" people "down under" is that we allow wankers like you into our country.  If you are judging us on the actions of a few then we should too.  I am guessing that you are an arrogant Yank?  Perhaps Michael Jackson and Britney Spears should tour schools and give out "how to be a good parent" lectures.  Perhaps we should hand out guns like lollies and have your murder and crime rate.  You carry out atrocities in other countries all in the name of "freedom" when all you want is oil and a chance to test your weapons.  You would have to be crazy to consider your part of the world to be "normal."  Piss off and keep your opinions to yourself you flag kissing Seppo.

Subject: Fuel cap LIE!
The World's BEST USELESS INFORMATION THAT MEANS SOMETHING? So thinking that this story was true, I pulled into the gas station the other day in my 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Seirra S, to refuel. Since I own 4 different vehicles it gets a lil difficult to remember which side my fuel door is on. I remember the article on your website. Well you know the rest of the story. Needless to say that story is FALSE! If you need pics to prove it let me know. Also My 1987 Buick Grand National has a fuel cap behind the rear license plate. So where is the pump handle icon for that found? Tell that guy to stuff it. posting myths for mythbusters to figure out or what?

Subject: The worlds best useless information, is unfortunatly useless!!
Dear Mr Orsm, this week youve posted a reader mail from Brad, about the wonderful discovery hes made about our fuel tanks and the display on our dash. Now he sounded so excited and as though he had made an enormous breakthrough, but could not work out why it wasnt in the readers manuals, why car dealers dont tell us and why mechanics cant explain it?! It just sounds too good to be true....

...well unfortunately the answer to all these question is simple. His theory is not true!! You see i drive a 1995 Toyota Corolla Hatch, a very common car, and my car disproves his theory. My handle is on the right (in the picture on the dash) but my filler door is on the left. Now a Toyota corolla is a very common car, i wonder how many other cars dont support his theory. Sorry Brad but the best explanation for this amazing new theory is that its all lies!!
